Thelma Joyce Monaghan ( nee Hawkey)
20th July 1920 – 24th April 2022
Aged 101 years.
Passed away peacefully while in the kind and
compassionate care of
Tarago Views nursing home
where she had been residing for the past 22 months.
Beloved and adored wife of Daniel Monaghan
and dearly loved and devoted mother of Laraine.
And a wonderful Aunty and Great Aunty to many.

Mum, it was a privilege to take care of you,
as you have always cared and been there for me.
Everyday I will miss your cuppas, your great cooking,
our talks at the kitchen table, seeing you in the garden
and your advice on gardening, cooking, and families.
Of course I will miss our nightly chats and you telling me
what you ‘heard on the air’, or saw on the TV.
I will miss you sharing, all the happy memories
you would recount about your life, funny stories and love filled
stories about the children that you cared for over the years.
I will miss hearing you say “I love you” and saying it back to you.
I will miss your warm blue eyes filled with pride and encouragement.
I will miss something about you every day that I remain alive.
But, I have so many happy memories that you gave me,
to fall back on, and most importantly
I know you are now with dad again
and that will make you happy.
– Ever loving daughter Laraine

  1. So very sad to hear of the passing of your beautiful Mum. Will always remember her climbing up to the trestle bridge with the rest us,putting some of us to shame. I know she loved you with all her heart and passed on all her wisdom and guidance. Wish we could be there but unfortunately Mick is not up to travelling. 5. So sad to hear of Mrs Monaghan passing. Such a lovely lady. Our parents and ourselves have had a long association with Mrs Monaghan and her husband Dan. Community minded and Mrs Monaghan has supported Drouin in many ways without any fuss, just quietly behind the scenes. God Bless. Our sympathy to Larraine.

  6. Sending my deepest sympathies to you Laraine. It was an absolute honour to care for Joyce during her time at Neerim South. I cannot explain the impact and inspiration she was to me in the short time of knowing her. I will consider her a beloved friend for life, as would everyone else who was lucky enough to know her. I will always miss the hours spent in her room laughing so deeply together that we’d both be in tears, or the other days I’d be in tears of joy over her beautiful love stories about Dan. I’ll miss sneaking single lint chocolate balls on her table every shift when she was having a nap, she always woke up with a joyful laugh “now how did this get here, I might have to eat it”.
Please know you have been in my thoughts and prayers. Sending love on behalf of the team at Neerim South Tarago Views.

    • Your words are so lovely Maddy and they capture Mum perfectly. The care provided was exceptional. Being able to make friends with staff gave mum such joy. She cared about you all. Jai said that “joycey called me by different names because sometimes she couldnt remember my name, but whatever name she used she said it with love”. But mum remembered your name and she would often talk about you. You touched her and enriched her life.
